Reading at your level

Well, another day has dawned in the Sacramento Valley!

I find that the first thing I do every morning is I grab my iPhone and catch up on what has happened on Facebook. Today is no different!

As I scrolled through the postings of friends and family, I came across a posting from Isabella Wagner. Isa is a brilliant person, who just happens to be my cousin by marriage! She is an educator and I always enjoy her postings!

Today she posted an article about four Ph.D.'s that were befuddled taking a third graders test. I thought this would make for some interesting reading, a good laugh at some intellectual's expense!

As I read the article, I became aware of a system to teach children to read that did not foster a love of reading, but instead a mechanical, get to the point method of reading! Children are assigned a reading level. Parents are instructed that the child is to read at that level, not above, nor below. To do so would hamper the child's learning! Really?!

Reading is one of my joys in life! I must admit as I've gotten older, the time to read has become less. I will say though, that during my years on this Earth, I have read my fair share of "junk food" reading as well as literature and articles that have pushed my understanding. The point is that I learned from everything that I have read!

Don't pigeon hole children when they are at the zenith of development! Allow their minds to grow with ideas and concepts! These young people are the future of our worlds!

Day 1

Hi all!

Well, Kevin Knauss has talked me into blogging! Really?! So starting today and periodically I will be regaling you all with my random thoughts! I'll also sprinkle my postings with what's happening at PeraDice Cards & Gifts! Lucky you!

The world has become a much more complicated and connected place! We used to be able to just pick up a phone and that was the extent of our "communicating"! Now we Facebook, Twitter, Text Message and the like, just to name a few! Long gone are the days we just talked! So, I will embrace this Brave New World and communicate the way the natives do!

So, I welcome you to the mind of Steven Pera! Be afraid, be very afraid!
